Circa 1940s
Love Dogs? Love Lamps? The French were famous in the Deco period of combining marble or other stone plinths (bases) with a light (usually a ball) and a spelter (mixed metal) animal figure. In addition to this pup, I have another very closely matching one, and a bird which I will list later. I fell for his face!
Many people collect all the animals and display them together. Start with one of these, and you can have your very own lamp zoo! This lamp especially appealed to us as it displays its original retail sticker which reads: “Montpeyroux – Bijouter Orfevre – Beziers” (Translated: Montpetroux <the name of the retailer> – Jeweler, Goldsmith – Beziers) which is the place where the lamp was purchased and resides. Wiring needs to be replaced for your market.
